Hydrogen Water PPB: The Simple 1,600 Limit You Need

Hydrogen water ppb is the number every brand puts on the box, and it is the number most buyers compare. It is worth understanding, because it has a hard physical ceiling and because it only tells you half the story.

What Does Hydrogen Water PPB Actually Mean?

Hydrogen water ppb means parts per billion of dissolved hydrogen. One ppb is one microgram of H2 in a litre of water, so 1,500 ppb is 1.5 milligrams per litre. You will also see the same thing written as ppm or mg/L, where 1.5 mg/L equals 1,500 ppb. Different units, identical amount.

That unit confusion is the first thing to clear up when comparing products. A bottle claiming 1.5 ppm and a bottle claiming 1,500 ppb are claiming exactly the same concentration.

How Many PPB Is Good for Hydrogen Water?

There is no regulatory minimum for hydrogen water ppb and no officially defined effective level. What exists is a range that research has actually used. Drinking studies have generally worked somewhere between about 500 and 1,600 ppb, with many landing near the saturation point.

The upper end of that band is not a marketing choice. It is a physical limit.

Why Is 1,600 the Hydrogen Water PPB Ceiling?

Henry's law describes how much of a gas a liquid can hold at a given pressure. For hydrogen in water at sea level and room temperature, that works out to about 1.6 mg/L, which is 1,600 ppb. Above that, plain water simply cannot hold more at normal pressure.

This is why a claim of 5,000 or 8,000 ppb deserves a question rather than an assumption. Sometimes the number describes water under pressure, or a reading taken at the instant of generation before the gas escapes. Neither is the same as what reaches your mouth.

Why Hydrogen Water PPB Alone Does Not Tell You the Dose

Dose is concentration multiplied by volume. A single 500 mL bottle at 1,500 ppb contains about 0.75 mg of hydrogen. That is the honest arithmetic, and it changes how the number on the box should be read.

Compare that with a clinical trial. The 24-week metabolic syndrome study used more than 5.5 millimoles of H2 per day, which is roughly 11 mg. Reaching that from ordinary water at 1,500 ppb would take about seven litres a day, which is why that trial used supersaturated tablets rather than a bottle. The same hydrogen water ppb can mean very different doses depending on how much you actually drink.

We would rather say this plainly than imply otherwise: a portable bottle is a convenient daily source of hydrogen water, not a way to reproduce a clinical trial dose. Any brand suggesting the two are equivalent is skipping the arithmetic.

How Should You Read a Hydrogen Water PPB Claim?

Four questions separate a measured hydrogen water ppb number from a marketing number.

Measured with what?A dissolved hydrogen meter, or a colour reagent test. Meters give a number, reagent drops give a rough band.

Measured when?At the end of the cycle, or after it sat for an hour. Concentration falls from the moment generation stops.

Measured by whom?The maker, or an independent laboratory with a report number you can look up.

Above 1,600?Then ask what pressure and what moment the reading refers to, because plain water at 1 atm cannot hold more.

What Does the H2CAP PLUS Measure?

The hydrogen water ppb range is 1,000 to 1,500 after a full cycle, depending on water temperature, mineral content and bottle volume. A third-party test in Japan recorded 1,036 ppb in 2018. We publish the range rather than the single best reading, because a single best reading is not what you get on a normal day.
