Hydrogen Water vs Alkaline Water: 5 Honest Differences

Hydrogen water vs alkaline water is one of the most confused comparisons in this market, because the two are often sold from the same shelf with the same promises. They are not the same thing. Alkaline water changes the pH of the glass. Hydrogen water adds a dissolved gas. One machine, the water ionizer, does a little of both, which is where most of the confusion starts.

What Is the Real Difference in Hydrogen Water vs Alkaline Water?

Alkaline water is any drinking water with a pH above 7, usually somewhere around pH 8 to 9.5. A higher pH means fewer free hydrogen ions, not more hydrogen gas. Bottled alkaline water normally gets there by adding mineral salts such as bicarbonates, so nothing new is dissolved in it except those minerals.

Hydrogen water is water carrying dissolved molecular hydrogen, H2, the same gas that rises from an electrode. Its strength is measured in parts per billion, and plain water at sea-level pressure tops out near 1,600 ppb. The pH can stay exactly where it started.

So the core of hydrogen water vs alkaline water is simple: one changes a chemical property of the water, the other adds a gas to it. Our guide to hydrogen water ppb explains what those concentration numbers mean.

Hydrogen water vs alkaline water on three dials. Bottled alkaline water moves pH only; ionizer water moves pH and carries some H2; a PEM cell adds H2 and leaves the pH near the source.

Why Does Ionized Alkaline Water Blur Hydrogen Water vs Alkaline Water?

A water ionizer runs tap water past two electrodes. On the cathode side, water is reduced: hydroxide ions build up, so the pH rises, and hydrogen gas forms at the same surface. Some of that gas stays dissolved in the alkaline stream that comes out of the drinking spout.

Researchers who study this electrolyzed reduced water describe it as having three properties at once: a higher pH, dissolved hydrogen and a strongly negative oxidation-reduction potential, or ORP. For years all three were marketed together as "alkaline ionized water". Separating them matters, because they do not have the same evidence behind them.

Two glasses can look identical and differ on both dials. In hydrogen water vs alkaline water, a pH strip and a hydrogen meter answer different questions.

That separation is easy to see on a meter. An ORP reading falls sharply when hydrogen is dissolved, whatever the pH. Bottled alkaline water usually reads a positive ORP despite its high pH, while neutral water from a two-chamber PEM cell reads strongly negative. A negative ORP number is a hydrogen signal, not an alkaline one.

What Does the Research Say About Each Side?

The case for alkaline water rests mostly on the idea that drinking it changes the body's pH. It does not do so in any lasting way. Stomach acid sits around pH 1.5 to 3.5, and the kidneys and lungs hold blood within roughly pH 7.35 to 7.45 regardless of what you drink.

On the alkaline side of hydrogen water vs alkaline water, the clinical record is thin. When a 2016 systematic review in BMJ Open screened 8,278 citations on dietary acid load, alkaline water and cancer, one study met the inclusion criteria, and it found no association. The authors concluded that promoting alkaline water for cancer prevention or treatment is not justified.

Hydrogen has a different starting point. A 2007 Nature Medicine study reported that H2 selectively reduced the hydroxyl radical, the most damaging reactive oxygen species, in cell and animal models.

Human trials since then are small and mixed, and none of them makes hydrogen water a treatment. But the proposed mechanism belongs to the dissolved gas, not to pH. That is the honest center of hydrogen water vs alkaline water: when ionized water is credited with antioxidant effects, the hydrogen in it is the leading explanation.

In hydrogen water vs alkaline water, difference four is the one buyers feel in practice. Alkaline water keeps its pH for days in a sealed bottle, so it can be shipped and stored.

Hydrogen is a small, fast gas, and once the cap is off it leaves the water within hours, which is why hydrogen water is best made at the point of drinking. Our article on how long hydrogen water lasts shows the half-life numbers.

How Should You Choose Between Hydrogen Water vs Alkaline Water?

Start any hydrogen water vs alkaline water decision by naming what you actually want. If it is the taste of a mineral-rich, slightly alkaline water, alkaline water delivers that, and there is nothing wrong with preferring it. If it is molecular hydrogen, judge every device on measured ppb and on how the gas is kept apart from by-products, not on pH.

In hydrogen water vs alkaline water shopping, pH is a poor guide even inside the hydrogen category. Magnesium-based hydrogen tablets also raise pH, because the magnesium reaction leaves magnesium hydroxide in the glass, so even within hydrogen water the pH number tells you little.

Ask for ppb, not pHA seller who quotes only pH for a "hydrogen" product is describing the wrong property.

Ask how the gases are separatedA two-chamber PEM cell keeps oxygen and chlorine by-products out of the drinking side.

Treat disease claims as a red flagNeither alkaline nor hydrogen water is approved to treat any condition.

Measure at the glassHydrogen fades after opening, so the reading that matters is the one taken when you drink.

We make both ionizers and the H2CAP PLUS, so we have no reason to run one down. In hydrogen water vs alkaline water, our position is narrow: call each water by what it is, measure the property you are paying for, and leave medical claims out of it.

The safety side of the hydrogen question is covered in is hydrogen water safe, and the membrane that separates the gases is explained in our guide to SPE and PEM membranes.

Lemon water is often sold as alkalizing, yet the glass itself is acidic. It is a useful reminder that hydrogen water vs alkaline water claims need a measurement, not a slogan.

Hydrogen Water vs Alkaline Water: Six Questions Buyers Ask

Is alkaline water the same as hydrogen water?

No. Alkaline water is defined by pH, meaning it has fewer hydrogen ions than neutral water. Hydrogen water is defined by dissolved H2 gas measured in ppb. A glass can be alkaline with no hydrogen in it, or full of hydrogen at a neutral pH.

Does hydrogen water change the pH of water?

It depends on how it is made. A two-chamber PEM cell such as the H2CAP PLUS leaves the pH close to the source water. Magnesium tablets raise the pH because the reaction leaves magnesium hydroxide behind. Ionizers raise the pH on the cathode side by design.

Is ionized alkaline water also hydrogen water?

Partly. Water from the cathode side of an ionizer carries some dissolved hydrogen along with its higher pH, which is why it reads a negative ORP. How much hydrogen it holds varies with the machine, the flow rate and the source water, so it should be measured rather than assumed.

Does lemon water make your body alkaline?

Lemon water itself is acidic. The idea that it alkalizes the body refers to how foods are metabolized, but the body holds blood pH in a narrow range either way, and a 2016 systematic review found no evidence that alkaline diets or alkaline water prevent or treat cancer.

Does a negative ORP reading mean the water is alkaline?

No. An ORP meter responds mainly to dissolved hydrogen, not to pH. Bottled alkaline water usually reads a positive ORP despite a high pH, while neutral hydrogen water reads negative. Use a pH meter for pH and a dissolved hydrogen meter for hydrogen.

Which one should I drink?

Neither is a medicine. If your interest is molecular hydrogen, judge a device by measured ppb, not by pH. If you simply prefer the taste or the minerals of alkaline water, that is a reasonable choice too. The mistake is paying for one while believing you are getting the other.

The Short Answer

Hydrogen water vs alkaline water is a comparison between a gas and a pH value. Alkaline water raises pH and has no good evidence behind its disease claims. Hydrogen water adds dissolved H2, the part with a proposed mechanism, and it fades soon after the cap comes off. Ionizer water sits in between. Buy the property you want, and ask for the number that proves it.
